Research interests

Our research aims to understand the role of components (apolipoproteins, enzymes, lipid transporters, lipid transfer proteins, lipoprotein receptors) of the lipoprotein system in circulation and the brain, in both health and disease. Specifically, our current research activities include: a) characterization of changes in atheroprotective properties and composition of HDL in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases before and after therapy; b) enhancement of HDL atheroprotective properties by small molecules targeting the structure/function of specific components of HDL; c) understanding of molecular mechanisms by which apolipoprotein E4 increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease; d) studying the role of lipids in circulation and the brain in Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis.
